Santa Anna (1794-1876) was a central figure in the political and military course of Mexican history in the first half of the 19th century, where he served intermittently as president, and, towards the end of his political career, as a self-styled dictator. His military defeats in the [Texas Revolution](https://www.worldhistory.org/Texas_Revolution/) and [Mexican-American War](https://www.worldhistory.org/Mexican-American_War/), as well as cessions of land to the United States, led to a series of exiles from Mexico, the last of which lasted two decades.
