The Theatre of Dougga, located in modern Tunisia, was completed around 166 CE during the reign of [Antoninus Pius](https://www.worldhistory.org/Antoninus_Pius/). The construction was funded by Publius Marcius Quadratus, a member of one of the wealthiest families in the [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/). Modest in size, the theatre could accommodate 3,500 spectators across its 19 semicircular tiers, which were carved into the hillside. The stage featured a central semicircular niche flanked by square niches on either side.
