## Image Caption

*Interior of [Alamo](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/2805/the-alamo/), with modern roof; where final stand was made*, photograph in Leonora Bennett's *Historical Sketch and Guide to the Alamo*, 1904.

The Alamo, originally a Spanish mission, was a fortress garrisoned first by the Spanish, then the Mexican Army after the Mexican [War](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/) of Independence, and later, most famously, by Texian forces during the [Texas Revolution](https://www.worldhistory.org/Texas_Revolution/). The chapel as pictured here was the site where the final Texian defenders, manning two 12-pounder cannons, were overwhelmed in the [Battle of the Alamo](https://www.worldhistory.org/Battle_of_the_Alamo/).
