Romuald Traugutt (1826-1864) was the final military leader of the ill-fated [January Uprising of 1863](https://www.worldhistory.org/January_Uprising_of_1863/), an attempt to regain Polish independence from Tsarist Russia. Traugutt, from his clandestine command, worked to centralize and professionalize the uprising's insurgency forces. Despite his efforts, the movement faltered, and he was ultimately discovered, tried, and hanged at the Warsaw Citadel in 1864.
