The only known portrait of Juan Nepomuceno Seguín (1806-1890), this painting depicts the Tejano (Mexican Texan) leader who joined the [Texas Revolution](https://www.worldhistory.org/Texas_Revolution/), serving at the [Alamo](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/2805/the-alamo/) and as a calvary commander in the [Battle of San Jacinto](https://www.worldhistory.org/Battle_of_San_Jacinto/) in 1836. After the [war](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/) was won, Seguín became the only Tejano to serve as senator in the newborn Republic of Texas, where he advocated for a bilingual government.
