An American colonist in the then-Mexican territory of Texas, Milam partook in the Mexican [War](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/) of Independence and later the [Texas Revolution](https://www.worldhistory.org/Texas_Revolution/) on the side of the Texans. He died while leading troops during the Siege of Béxar on 7 December 1835.
