## Image Caption

Stenkvista church [runes](https://www.worldhistory.org/runes/), a runescape carving in granite, photographed by Berig, Södermanland, c. 900-1100

The [sculpture](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Sculpture/) is one of many runestones from the end of the [Viking Age](https://www.worldhistory.org/collection/29/the-viking-age/) in Scandinavia and is a memorial dedicated by sons to their father. It is thought that [Thor](https://www.worldhistory.org/Thor/)'s hammer is seen as either a parallel pagan symbol or a syncretized symbol with the Christian cross.
