William Barret "Buck" Travis (1809-1836) was commander of the Alamo garrison during the siege of the fort by Mexican forces and was killed in the assault of the early morning of March 6, 1836. Travis and his fellow defenders became martyrs to the independence cause, rallying support for the [Texas Revolution](https://www.worldhistory.org/Texas_Revolution/).
