McArdle's painting depicts the [Battle](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/battle/) of San Jacinto, the final conflict of the [Texas Revolution](https://www.worldhistory.org/Texas_Revolution/), where General [Sam Houston](https://www.worldhistory.org/Sam_Houston/) defeated General Santa Anna on April 21, 1836, winning Texas its independence from Mexico. Houston can be seen in the centre left, where he is portrayed encouraging his forces forward after being struck by Mexican fire.
