The Alamo, originally a Spanish mission, was a fortress garrisoned first by the Spanish, then the Mexican Army after the Mexican [War](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/) of Independence, and later, most famously, by Texian forces during the [Texas Revolution](https://www.worldhistory.org/Texas_Revolution/). Their defeat at the [Battle of the Alamo](https://www.worldhistory.org/Battle_of_the_Alamo/) spurred both a recruitment surge for Texas independence and a panic for the civilian population, who fled eastward in what became known as the "Runaway Scrape."
