[Stephen F. Austin](https://www.worldhistory.org/Stephen_F._Austin/) (1793-1836) led the establishment of the first Anglo-American settlement in the Texas territory and emerged as the region's authority. Although he believed in a beneficial relationship to Mexican rule over the territory, Austin advocated against the government's opposition to slavery and ultimately joined in the [Texas Revolution](https://www.worldhistory.org/Texas_Revolution/).
