Sam Houston (1793-1863), propelled by his victory at the [Battle of San Jacinto](https://www.worldhistory.org/Battle_of_San_Jacinto/) and defeat of the Mexican army in the [Texas Revolution](https://www.worldhistory.org/Texas_Revolution/), became the first president of the Republic of Texas, a short-lived nation that was ultimately admitted into the United States in 1845.
