*A Night Scout in the Southwest; Surprise of an Outpost, and Survey of the Rebel Guns*, wood engraving print by Thomas Nast, 1863.

This piece depicts Union scouts attempting to stealthily ambush a Confederate outpost overlooking a rebel fort along the river. Mastery of the [American Civil War](https://www.worldhistory.org/American_Civil_War/)'s western [theatre](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/theatre/) would lie in who could hold the Mississippi, and Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) would lead the Union army in a series of campaigns from 1861 to 1863 to do just that.
