Adolph Metzner (1834-1918) was a German-born immigrant to the United States who enlisted in the Union army soon after the [American Civil War](https://www.worldhistory.org/American_Civil_War/) broke out, where he would serve three years with the 32nd Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment. A talented artist, he drew, painted, and sketched the life of soldiers and what they saw. While his work was often humorous, at the [Battle](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/battle/) of Shiloh in April 1862, he recorded the unvarnished brutality of [war](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/).
