Oluale Kossola, photograph included in Emma Langdon Roche's *Historic Sketches of the South*, c. 1914.

Kossola (c. 1841-1935), later known as Cudjo Lewis, a Yoruba man of what is now Benin, was abducted by slavers in April 1860 and secretly transported to Mobile, Alabama, on the slave ship *Clotilda*. He would go on to become one of the founders of Africatown, a husband to Abile (a fellow survivor of the *Clotild*a), and a father to six children.
