*Ball of the Burning Men*, illumination on parchment by Phillipe de Mazerolle, included in Jean Froissart's treatise *Froissart's Chronicles*, Book 4, c. 1470.

Depiction of the deadly Ball of the Burning Men (French: *Bal des Ardents)* at the French court in January 1393. Though King [Charles VI of France](https://www.worldhistory.org/Charles_VI_of_France/) survived the fire, four of the other dancers did not; the tragedy was seen by many as evidence of the decadence of the French court, and contributed to Charles VI's descent into madness.
