*Charles VI (1368-1422), King of France*, oil on canvas painting by Gillot Saint-Evre, 1837.

Commissioned by King Louis Philippe I in 1837, the painting is part of the *Portraits of the Kings of France* series in the [Palace](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/palace/) of Versailles. [Charles VI of France](https://www.worldhistory.org/Charles_VI_of_France/) is remembered today mostly for his severe mental illness, plunging France into civil strife, and his disastrous performance against the English in the [Hundred Years' War](https://www.worldhistory.org/Hundred_Years'_War/) (1337-1453).
