[Silver](https://www.worldhistory.org/Silver/) shilling from the [Massachusetts Bay Colony](https://www.worldhistory.org/Massachusetts_Bay_Colony/) by John Hull and Robert Sanderson, c. 1667 to c. 1682.

The Massachusetts Bay Colony mint, from which this stamped [coin](https://www.worldhistory.org/coinage/) originates, was established to increase the availability of hard currency in the early years of the settlement. On the obverse is stamped “IN” and “MASATHVSETS,” as well as a central pine tree. The coins from the mint in this period were stamped “1652” (on the reverse, not pictured here) regardless of the actual year of issue.
