*The Marble Lion of [Piraeus](https://www.worldhistory.org/Piraeus/)*, book illustration by an unknown artist, included in *Antiquités de l'Orient* by Carl Christian Rafn, p. 54, Copenhagen, 1856.

This lion is one of several that were brought to Venice from [Greece](https://www.worldhistory.org/greece/) and set outside the [Arsenale](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/2776/arsenale/) gates in 1692. On the upper right shoulder of the lion is a runic carving in the shape of a dragon (faint today), thought to be a 10th-century reference to the [conquest](https://www.worldhistory.org/warfare/) of an area in Greece. Recent research by Marangon and Fei identifies it as the work of Hakon the warrior (I Graffiti di Venezia L'Arsenale, pp. 59-60)
