## Image Caption

*An East Perspective View of the [City](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) of Philadelphia*, print engraved by John Carwitham, c. 1778. Based on the original illustration by George Heap, 1752.

This panoramic view of the bustling Philadelphia harbour and cityscape came to print after Thomas Penn (1746-1775), chief proprietor of Pennsylvania and son of the late William Penn (from whom the colonial province received its name), called for an illustration of the city in order to advertise its growth and to encourage investment and immigration.

The New York Public Library.
