Frederick Douglass died on 20 February 1895 from a heart attack at age 76 or 77 (his exact date of birth in February 1818 is contested). After a grand funeral with thousands of attendants and being received in state in Rochester [City](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) Hall, he was laid to rest next to his first wife, Anna Murray Douglass, in Mount Hope Cemetery.
