Frederick Douglass was one of the most important 19th-century African-American leaders who escaped slavery to become a prominent abolitionist, orator, writer, and social reformer. Among other things, Douglass was a leading voice for the abolition of slavery in the lead-up to the [American Civil War](https://www.worldhistory.org/American_Civil_War/), encouraged African-American participation in the Union Army, and continued to champion civil rights after the [war](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/)'s conclusion. Here he is shown later in life, c. 58 years old.
