## Image Caption

Anna Murray Douglass (1813-1882), photograph by unknown photographer in Anna Murray Douglass, My Mother As I Recall Her* by Rosetta Douglass Sprague, 1900.

This photograph shows Anna Murray-Douglass, first wife of [Frederick Douglass](https://www.worldhistory.org/Frederick_Douglass/), later in life, sometime between 1859 and 1882. She was instrumental in helping her soon-to-be husband escape from enslavement in 1838, as well as overseeing much of the finances, supervision, and childcare of their large household. Not much scholarship has been dedicated to her, and most of what we know about her comes from her daughter, Rosetta Douglass Sprague, who wrote about her mother in the aforementioned pamphlet.
