# Arch of the Philaeni

The Arch of the Philaeni, a monument to the Italian colonisation of Libya, was commissioned by Italo Balbo (1896-1940), governor of Libya from 1934 to 1940. The arch was designed by the architect Florestano Di Fausto and was inaugurated on March 16, 1937. The arch was dismantled in 1973 at the behest of the Libyan leader Muhammar Gaddafi (1942-2011), who considered it a symbol of the colonial period. (*L'Illustrazione Italliana*, 1 March 1937).
