*Cadets That Died in Defense of the Fatherland the 13 of September of 1847*. Illustration of cadets who died in the [Battle](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/battle/) of Chapultepec, book drawing by an unknown artist, included in *México a través de los siglos*, fourth book by Juan de Dios Arios and Enrique de Olavarría y Ferrari, p. 694, 1888.

Many Mexican cadets were in the fortress of Chapultepec during the US Army's attack and aided the defenders. The most famous of which, Juan Escutia, is said to have thrown himself from the fortress wrapped in the Mexican flag to prevent its capture by the enemy. 13th September is a public holiday in Mexico celebrating the sacrifice of the cadets in battle against US intervention.
