## Image Caption

The [column](https://www.worldhistory.org/column/) of Phocas in the [Roman Forum](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Forum/), [Rome](https://www.worldhistory.org/Rome/). The column is 13 metres high and stands on a brick base surrounded by marble steps. The inscription on the base reveals that the column was dedicated to Phocas, a [centurion](https://www.worldhistory.org/Centurion/) who became emperor of [Byzantium](https://www.worldhistory.org/Byzantium/) in 602 CE. A statue of the emperor would have once stood on top of the column. It is the last [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) monument constructed in the forum.
