It was built by Augustus to commemorate the [Battle](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/battle/) of [Philippi](https://www.worldhistory.org/Philippi/) and the defeat of [Julius Caesar](https://www.worldhistory.org/Julius_Caesar/)'s assassins in 42 BCE.
