## Image Caption

Detail photo depicting the virgin [martyr](https://www.worldhistory.org/martyr/) Saint Agnes of [Rome](https://www.worldhistory.org/Rome/) (circa 291-304), patron saint of young girls, those seeking chastity and purity, and rape survivors. She is depicted holding a lamb (*agnus* in Latin), as she has been since the Middle Ages. The figure was designed by Edward Burne-Jones, and the foliage by Henry Dearle. The tapestry was woven by Morris & Co. in 1887.
