The Empress Mother Cixi (1835 - 1908) photographed in 1903 with the wives of the diplomatic corps having a tea in the Forbidden [City](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/), the Chinese imperial [palace](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/palace/). After the [death](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Death/) of her husband, the [Chinese emperor](https://www.worldhistory.org/Chinese_Emperor/) Xianfeng (1831-1861), Cixi was the regent of the Chinese [empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/empire/) while waiting for her son and heir to the throne Tongzhi (1856-1875) to come of age and, after her son's death, for her grandchild Guangxu (1871-1908).
