A c. 1916 cartoon showing the Russian self-styled monk and faith healer [Grigori Rasputin](https://www.worldhistory.org/Grigori_Rasputin/) (1869-1916) who gained influence over the family of [Tsar Nicholas II](https://www.worldhistory.org/Tsar_Nicholas_II/) (reign 1894-1917) and his wife Empress Alexandra Feodorovna (1872-1918). The Russian press printed scandalous stories about Rasputin and ridiculed what was considered his excessive influence over the royal family, particularly during the First World [War](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/) (1914-18).
