A 1905 photograph of the Russian Orthdox priest Georgy Gapon (1870-1906). On [Bloody Sunday in 1905](https://www.worldhistory.org/Bloody_Sunday_in_1905/) peaceful protestors led by Gapon wished to present [Tsar Nicholas II](https://www.worldhistory.org/Tsar_Nicholas_II/) (reign 1894-1917) with a petition of reforms but were shot down by soldiers outside the Winter [Palace](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/palace/) in St. Petersburg.
