# Plate with Monogram of the Dutch East India Company

A plate from the [Edo period](https://www.worldhistory.org/Edo_Period/) (1615-1868) in Arita, [Saga](https://www.worldhistory.org/Saga/) Prefecture in [Japan](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Japan/), 1670-1740. "VOC" is the monogram for the [Dutch East India Company](https://www.worldhistory.org/Dutch_East_India_Company/), whose name in Dutch is Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie. Inspired by contemporary and previous Chinese export wares, it was typical for Japanese potters to decorate plates with divided rims, and even sometimes with the monogram VOC.
