The statue shows Edith Swanneck finding the body of the English king [Harold Godwinson](https://www.worldhistory.org/Harold_Godwinson/) (r. Jan-Oct 1066) on the field of the [Battle of Hastings](https://www.worldhistory.org/Battle_of_Hastings/) in 1066. It was built by Charles [Augustus](https://www.worldhistory.org/augustus/) William Wilke, 1875, a few miles from the battlefield of Hasting, in Sussex, southeast [England](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/england/).
