## Image Caption

Ellen Craft (l. 1826-1891) in her disguise as a Southern gentleman during the 1848 flight to freedom of Ellen and her husband William Craft (l. 1824-1900). The original image appeared as the frontspiece to their *Running a Thousand Miles For Freedom* (1860). The present image is an illustration from page 162 of *The [Underground Railroad](https://www.worldhistory.org/Underground_Railroad/) from Slavery to Freedom* by Wilbur Henry Siebert, Albert Bushnell Hart, Edition: 2, published by Macmillan, 1898.
