An October 1942 photograph showing civilians collecting the dead during the [Siege of Leningrad](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/2680/siege-of-leningrad/) (Saint Petersburg) during [Operation Barbarossa](https://www.worldhistory.org/Operation_Barbarossa/), the invasion of the USSR launched by the leader of Nazi Germany [Adolf Hitler](https://www.worldhistory.org/Adolf_Hitler/) (1889-1945) in the Second World [War](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/) (1939-45). The siege, more accurately described as a blockade, lasted from 8 September 1941 to 27 January 1944.
