## Image Caption

This photo is an aerial view of the martyred village of Oradour-sur-Glane, near Limoges in south-west France where 643 innocent civilians were killed on 10 June 1944 during the Second World [War](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/) (1939-45). The massacre took place in possible retaliation for the capture of SS Sturmbannführer Helmut Kämpfe (1909-44) by the local resistance the day before in another town of the region. After the population was cruelly murdered, the whole town was set on fire. On 28 November 1944, the French Provisional Government decided to preserve the remains of Oradour-sur-Glane and make it a place of remembrance and self-reflection for visitors.
