A photograph of the Japanese [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) of Hiroshima after being hit by an atomic bomb dropped from a US Air Force [Boeing B-29 Superfortress](https://www.worldhistory.org/Boeing_B-29_Superfortress/) on 6 August 1945. The bomb was dropped in order to end the Second World [War](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/) (1939-45) as quickly as possible. Around 140,000 people were killed in the attack. The ruined building was the Industry Promotional Hall. This site was maintained as a memorial to the disaster. (Imperial War Museums)
