A side view of the [Kon-Tiki expedition](https://www.worldhistory.org/Kon-Tiki_Expedition/) raft which [Thor](https://www.worldhistory.org/Thor/) Heyerdahl (1914-2002) and his crew used to cross the Pacific Ocean from Peru to Polynesia in 1947. The raft was made from traditional materials like balsa-wood logs, bamboo, and coconut matting.
