[Josef Mengele](https://www.worldhistory.org/Josef_Mengele/) (1911-79) was a Nazi SS doctor who performed horrific pseudo-scientific experiments on detainees in the [Auschwitz](https://www.worldhistory.org/Auschwitz/) concentration camp. Mengele escaped to South America and this photograph dates to 1956 when he was in Argentina.
