The [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) province of Thrace, formally annexed in 46 CE, was a strategically important region of the [Roman Empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Empire/) by 200 CE. Situated in southeastern [Europe](https://www.worldhistory.org/europe/) (modern-day Bulgaria, northeastern [Greece](https://www.worldhistory.org/greece/), and European [Turkey](https://www.worldhistory.org/Asia_Minor/)), Thrace's fertile plains supported a strong agrarian [economy](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/economy/), producing grain, wine, and livestock. Its mountains yielded valuable minerals. Key [cities](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) served as centers of commerce and governance, connected by an extensive network of [Roman roads](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/758/roman-roads/).

Thrace’s location made it a critical frontier province, guarding the [empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/empire/)’s northern borders against incursions from tribes across the Danube. It also controlled vital [trade](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/trade/) routes linking the [Aegean](https://www.worldhistory.org/aegean/) and Black Sea regions. Governed by a Roman legate, Thrace was well-integrated into the empire’s administrative and military systems.
