This map illustrates the [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) province of Asia around 200 CE. Established in 129 BCE following the bequest of the Attalid Kingdom of [Pergamon](https://www.worldhistory.org/pergamon/) to [Rome](https://www.worldhistory.org/Rome/), it encompassed western [Anatolia](https://www.worldhistory.org/Asia_Minor/) (modern-day [Turkey](https://www.worldhistory.org/Asia_Minor/)). It was a wealthy and vibrant region by 200 CE. Its major [cities](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/), including [Ephesus](https://www.worldhistory.org/ephesos/), [Pergamum](https://www.worldhistory.org/pergamon/), Smyrna, and Miletus, were hubs of [trade](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/trade/), art, and intellectual activity, with an [economy](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/economy/) based on [agriculture](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Agriculture/), textiles, and artisanal goods. Asia was deeply Romanized by this time, blending Roman infrastructure and [law](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/law/) with its rich [Greek](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/greek/) heritage. Religious life was diverse, featuring temples to Greek and Roman gods, [mystery cults](https://www.worldhistory.org/Mystery_Cults/), and a growing Christian presence. Governed by a proconsul, Asia was peaceful, loyal to Rome, and one of the [empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/empire/)’s most affluent and urbanized provinces.
