Bahadur Shah Zafar (1775-1862) was the twentieth Mughal Emperor of Hindustan. The Mughal [Empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/empire/) ended with him during the [Sepoy Mutiny](https://www.worldhistory.org/Sepoy_Mutiny/) of 1857. Zafar was a celebrated poet and Sufi mystic who was exiled to Rangoon by the British [East India Company](https://www.worldhistory.org/East_India_Company/) after abdicating the throne to stop further bloodshed among his kin. One of his most famous poems is a ghazal called "*Lagta Nahin Hai Dil Mera*," a lament expressing his heartbreak at being exiled from his homeland.
