A cartoon drawn by David Low on the subject of the August 1939 [Nazi-Soviet Pact](https://www.worldhistory.org/Nazi-Soviet_Pact/), a non-aggression aggreement between Adolf Hilter (1889-1945), leader of Nazi Germany, and Joseph Stalin (1878-1953), leader of the USSR. Both dictators had spent years attacking each other and their respective ideologies before suddenly signing the agreement which carved up [Europe](https://www.worldhistory.org/europe/) between them, starting with Poland, which is represented by the corpse between Hitler and Stalin in the picture. The cartoon first appeared in the British *Evening Standard* newspaper in 1939.
