The [Louisiana Purchase](https://www.worldhistory.org/Louisiana_Purchase/) (1803) was the United States' acquisition of France's territorial claim to approximately 828,000 square miles (2.14 million km²) of North America for $15 million. Negotiated under President [Thomas Jefferson](https://www.worldhistory.org/Thomas_Jefferson/) (in office 1801–1809), it nearly doubled the republic's claimed territory, secured control of New Orleans and the Mississippi [trade](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/trade/) corridor, and accelerated westward exploration and expansion.

By 1804, the United States was organizing its newly acquired territories while the [Lewis and Clark expedition](https://www.worldhistory.org/Lewis_and_Clark_Expedition/) explored the Missouri River. Yet the purchase's boundaries remained disputed, Spain and [Britain](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Britain/) maintained competing claims, and Indigenous nations governed much of the continent's interior. American expansion intensified conflicts over land, sovereignty, and slavery, laying the foundations for the later ideology of Manifest Destiny and the sectional tensions preceding the [American Civil War](https://www.worldhistory.org/American_Civil_War/) (1861–1865).
