The identity of Aelfgifu is unclear, and the name was common among Old English royal [women](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/women/). Two leading candidates for being the Aelfgifu in this image are [Emma of Normandy](https://www.worldhistory.org/Emma_of_Normandy/) (who went by the English name Aelfgifu) and [Aelfgifu of Northampton](https://www.worldhistory.org/Aelfgifu_of_Northampton/).
