The treaty, following the armistice of 11 November 1918, formally ended the First World [War](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/) and imposed severe territorial, military, and financial penalties on Germany, including the loss of key territories, military restrictions and the requirement to pay heavy reparations. It also included the War Guilt Clause, which held Germany responsible for the war. The treaty established the [League of Nations](https://www.worldhistory.org/League_of_Nations/), aimed at preventing future conflicts, but its punitive terms contributed to future unrest in [Europe](https://www.worldhistory.org/europe/).
