During 1940, [Japan](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Japan/) began to encroach on French Indochina so that they could cut off the supplies that were routed through the area and into the hands of the Chinese, with whom they were at [war](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/) during the Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945).
