Published during the [French and Indian War](https://www.worldhistory.org/French_and_Indian_War/), the cartoon was used to advocate for the adoption of Benjamin Franklin's Albany Plan of Union. The colonies are depicted as severed pieces of a snake (the [New England colonies](https://www.worldhistory.org/New_England_Colonies/) are lumped together).
