The badge gave the division its lasting nickname, the '[Desert Rats](https://www.worldhistory.org/Desert_Rats/)'. The division first gained fame in the Western Desert Campaigns in North Africa during the Second World [War](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/) (1939-45).
