The missionary [journeys of Paul the Apostle](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/2515/the-journeys-of-paul-the-apostle/), also known as Saul of [Tarsus](https://www.worldhistory.org/Tarsus/), took place during the mid-1st century CE, within the interconnected world of the [Roman Empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Empire/) under emperors such as [Claudius](https://www.worldhistory.org/claudius/) (reign 41–54 CE) and [Nero](https://www.worldhistory.org/Nero/) (reign 54–68 CE). A central figure of the Apostolic Age, [Paul](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Paul/) played a decisive role in transforming [Christianity](https://www.worldhistory.org/christianity/) from a small Jewish sect into a transregional movement. His travels across the eastern [Mediterranean](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/mediterranean/) illustrate how [Roman roads](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/758/roman-roads/), maritime routes, and urban networks facilitated the rapid spread of religious ideas in antiquity.

Paul’s journeys, recorded in the [Acts of the Apostles](https://www.worldhistory.org/Acts_of_the_Apostles/) and echoed in his Epistles, demonstrate how early Christian teachings circulated through major [cities](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) such as [Antioch](https://www.worldhistory.org/Antiochia/), [Ephesus](https://www.worldhistory.org/ephesos/), [Corinth](https://www.worldhistory.org/corinth/), and [Rome](https://www.worldhistory.org/Rome/). These texts, supported in part by [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) administrative records and archaeological evidence, reveal the [empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/empire/) as a space of intense cultural exchange. Despite facing opposition, imprisonment, and eventual execution, Paul’s missions helped establish durable Christian communities and bridged Jewish, [Greek](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/greek/), and Roman traditions. His legacy shaped the theology, organization, and geographic reach of [early Christianity](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/1205/early-christianity/), embedding it within the social and cultural structures of the Roman world.
